Background

Alex Blumentals has spent twenty-five years building capability inside organisations — at Kearney and Ernst & Young, and since then as a founder — across Europe, the Americas and Africa. The work has been strategy, organisational transformation and large-scale change; for the past several years it has been what AI adoption does to the expertise an organisation runs on.

Three times he has led global best-practice studies in procurement: designing the questionnaire, recruiting participating companies across regions, and building the maturity stages and benchmarks that let a function see where it actually stood against its peers. Pillars, stages, evidence, comparison — that machinery is the direct ancestor of the register and the ladder in this book.

Professional services is the clearest instance of the mechanism the book describes: a business that sells expertise, manufactures it internally through graduate intake, and is now automating the very work through which that intake was formed. His research since 2024 is the formation and erosion of professional expertise under automation, including cross-sector case studies in financial services, retail, logistics, healthcare and professional services.

He is the founder of Twin Ladder, an open standard and measurement instrument for AI competence, and a partner at IdeaJetLab. He has also built and led technology ventures end to end.
